-It combines estrogen and progesterone, the two hormones that inhibit ovulation. Without ovulation there is no chance of pregnancy.

-It thickens the cervical mucus preventing the sperm from entering the uterus.

-It modifies the lining in the uterus making it unsuitable for the implantation of the egg.

The birth control pill has to be taken daily, preferably at the same hour, for twenty one days. During the seven days when there is no hormonal administration, the period appears. The pills are available either in 21 or in 28 pill packages. For the 28-pill package, the last seven pills are inactive, meaning that they contain no hormones at all.

Benefits of taking the birth control pill!
-The monthly bleeding is less intense.
-The pre-menstrual discomfort is seriously alleviated.
-Fertility is preserved, and it is totally reversible when you stop taking the pill.
-Hormonal imbalances may be treated.
-It prevents some forms of cancer.

There is one special kind of birth control pill that contains active hormones for 12 weeks and then inactive pills for a week. This means that the frequency of the period will be reduced to one in three months.

Yet, another type of birth control pill is the mini-pill. It contains progesterone only, and it has to be taken daily without any interruption, preferably at the same time every day regardless of whether you have sex or not. The efficiency of the mini-pill is considered inferior to the combined birth control pill.

The efficiency range of the birth control pill is very high, although 8 out of 100 couples face an unexpected pregnancy yearly, despite the use of this treatment. The chances of getting pregnant increase if you fail to take the pill daily, or you take it at random hours. Plus, there are some individual factors at work here, and they also influence the efficiency of the medication.

For example, the birth control pill may not work well if you follow some other herbal or medical treatment and there are interferences between the drugs. Moreover, the incidence of side effects should not be overlooked. Read carefully about the possible adverse reactions to the birth control pill, as well as the health conditions that make the use of the pill very risky. Only start a hormonal birth control treatment following doctor's orders!

  • The birth control shot is a contraceptive method injected intramuscularly every three months. It has a slow-release form and it normally contains one type of hormone only: progesterone. The main impact of this hormone is to prevent ovulation, meaning that there will be no egg release monthly.
  • The birth control patch is a dermal birth control product that prevents pregnancy by releasing hormones through the skin. The combined ingredients in a birth control patch are estrogens and progesterones, with a direct action on the ovulation. A woman will not ovulate while wearing the patch, which means that no egg will be released in the uterus and the sperm will encounter nothing to fertilize. The birth control patch also acts by thickening the cervical mucus and thus preventing the sperm to reach the eggs.
  • Male birth control is considered a controversial issue for lots of reasons. A few years ago large pharmaceutical companies like Schering, Organon or Wyeth announced the production of hormonal birth control designed especially for men, but the results of their research hasn't been finalized yet. Why? Because the investments are huge and the market is not that receptive to male birth control pills. Several programs have been abandoned for this reason, and it seems that drug companies don't show any renewal in their interest for this kind of birth control products.
  • Fertility awareness inevitably leads to natural birth control. There are many couples out there who for one reason or another cannot use hormonal contraceptives, and prefer to combine natural family planning with some non-traditional birth control method. The ovulation method, the rhythm method, the standard days method, the sympto-thermal method are just a few of the natural birth control options people rely on. Here is how each of these works.
