Personal development plans are certainly very popular today and can be put together to help you with everything from career improvement to weight loss to public speaking.

There are many different methods and tools you can use to achieve your personal development outcome and they come in all different price scales from expensive seminars to moderately priced books and ebooks. But, in essence, you can build a robust and useful self-development plan using just a few, simple, flexible steps, such as:

1) Identify the Cause The starting point for any effective personal development plan is identifying how you arrived at the point you’re at today. As an example, if you’re trying to lose weight, look at the lifestyle choices you’ve made that have contributed to being in the position you’re now in. Then come up with as complete a list of potential solutions as you can.

2) Goal Setting You need to have a definite goal in mind if you are to have any chance of success. Spend some quality time on this. Failing to set well-defined goals is probably the biggest reason that most people fail in their personal development.

3) Make a Plan Having set your goal you should commit to a firm plan of action setting out how you intend to achieve said goal. Wherever possible split bigger tasks into small steps that will be as easy as possible to implement.

4) Focus and Commitment Once you have decided on your goal and worked out the plan that you feel will allow you to reach it, you need to stay focussed and committed to achieving what you have decided upon. Little and often will be the best policy. Make yourself a promise that you will make time every day and stick to this promise. Don’t let distractions deflect you from it. If you do this you will soon find it becomes habit and at that point it will become easier.

5) Look for Inspiration Try to find some role models to insire you. If you can find some others who have achieved similar goals to the ones you aspire to. If you can’t find any individuals to insire you, you can get inspiration from books, seminars or DVDs.

You will get the best overall results if you make continuous personal development a part of your life.

Whichever area of your life you have decided you need to improve, if you diligently apply the steps listed above you will gain the confidence that will give you the belief that you can achieve anything you want to achieve.
